TFPL, July 2016: Originally I had entered, around 2008, that Samuel Latham had married Anna (speculated to be a corruption of Susanna) Stringer, daughter of Phineas Stringer and Affre Rouse.  I think someone had given me this information or that I had picked up that Phineas Rouse was the grandfather of one of Samuel Latham’s grandchildren.

The last is factual, found in 2016, as can be seen from Phineas Stringer’s will in which he very firmly asserts that Harriet Stringer Broderip was the daughter of his daughter Afra the wife of Edward Broderip.  Elswhere I had previously found evidence that Edward Broderip, then with an unknown wife, had a daughter Harriet Stringer Broderip who had married John Henry the second son of Samuel Latham.  This appeared to make Harriet Stringer Broderip and John Henry Latham first cousins, but that merely echoes the habit of marrying first cousins in the Latham-Taddy axis.

However with the increased number of parish registers entries available mainly through Family Search, whom both Ancestry and FindMypast borrow from indiscriminately, it has now become more likely that a very large proportion of parish register transcriptions can be found.  And every search I have done for a marriage between Samuel latham and a Susanna Stringer has drawn a blank.  The final blank to be drawn was the burial of Susanna Stringer in Dover a mere eighteen months after her birth.  Reluctantly, as it was a ghastly mistake on my part, I have decided that Susanna as wife of Samuel Latham is no longer tenable, particularly in view of the next discovery which obviates the need to construct the change of name from Susanna to Ann or Anne or Anna.

The problem with this marriage is in the bride’s surname which is the same as the maiden name of Samuel’s mother.  Presumably Sarah Henshaw, his mother, and Ann were related but I cannot even get onto the first step with any information on Anne’s parents.  This marriage is only to be found on FindMyPast, not on Family Search.  Perhaps the first step is to get hold of a photocopy of the marriage register.

The only baptism of an Ann Henshaw within a few years for narriage in Surrey and childbearing from 1782 to 1801 is:

The copy of the marriage register was found on Ancestry and included:

1. Samuel is "of the Parish of St James in the Town of Dover in the County of Kent a Batchelor" (Bingo!)

2. Ann Henshaw is "of this Parish of St George Southwark a Spinster & a minor"

3. The marriage was at St George Southwark on 19 Jan 1782, register No 184.

4. The marriage was with the "consent of Edward Henshaw the lawful ... of the said minor"
