Notes for Elizabeth Cutler
In the 1911 census she had two of her daughters with her, one widowed and said she had had five children of whom 3 were alive and had been married for 15 years.  They were living in an 11 roomed house at 2 Oakdale Road, Streatham, SW.

Her birth places on enumerator’s sheets:
1861:  Camberwell, Surrey
1871:  Camberwell, Surrey
1881:  Kennington, Surrey  (listed as ‘Bessie C Longman’)
1891:  Kennington, Surrey
1901:  Camberwell, Surrey
1911:  Kennington, Surrey

These birth places were then used to try to identify if she was Elizabeth Cutler before marriage, in the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

The best match in 1851 is this:

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status  Gender  Age  Birth year  Occupation  Birth place

Edwin A Smith Head Unmarried Male 29 1822 Solicitor  Blandford St Mary, Dorset
Caroline E A Smith Sister In Law Widow Female  22  1829  -  Sherborne, Dorset
Sarah Deane Aunt Widow Female 61 1790 - Axminster, Devon
Bessie Cutler Visitor Unmarried Female 22 1829  -  Camberwell, Surrey
Sarah Rideout Servant Widow Female 47 1804 -  Burton, Somerset
Henry Marsh Servant Unmarried Male 24 1827 Don Servant  Swanage, Dorset
Anne Gosney Servant Unmarried Female 21 1830 -  Dorset

But this does not identify her parents.  1841 is no good either.

Family Search has one candidate baptism, but not sure about it:

Name Eliza Cutler
Gender Female
Christening Date 20 Jan 1828
Christening Place MERTON,SURREY,ENGLAND
Father's Name William Cutler
Mother's Name Sarah
________________

Of her five children, clear deaths have been found for Catherine and Hubert before the 1911 census, so the other three, Winifred, Violet and Ethel were alive.  Of these, Violet’s and Ethel’s deaths have been found, but Winifred vanished from 1881 onwards.

So it looks like her line, and that of her husband, terminated with her children.
_______________

TFPL: In Aug 2018 Gillian Leitch contacted me to exchange information as she was descended from this Elizabeth’s sister Mary.  She also produced some wills which showed that her family and the Churchil-Lonmans were connected for at least the next two generations.  The real bonus was that she was able to tell me of this Elizabeth’s parents and full family.  Now to gathering whatever evidence that survives.
_______________

Elizabeth’s parents were: John Cutler (1794-1843) & Louisa Freak (1806-1874)

John and Louisa’s children were:

Elizabeth Cutler Churchill Longman (1828-1915)
Fanny [Louisa] Cutler (1834-c1850)
William Henry Cutler (1835-1895) [WH1]
Mary Cutler (1836-1921)

There is some doubt that Mary was the daughter of John Cytler.

Elizabeth, Fanny and William Henry were all baptised at St Mark’s, Kennington, Lambeth.  Mary was baptised in Kew, Surrey.  Curiously William was beptised twice, first at Key in 1835 and second at St Mark;s in 1843; no idea what was going on!

Their births and baptisms were:
Birth Baptism
Elizabeth NA 3 Oct 1828
Fanny 8 Jan 1834 11 Jul 1834
William Henry 4 May 1835 28 May 1835  and(!!)  23 Mar 1843
Mary 29 Dec 1836 1 Feb 1837

FamilySearch itself includes that the church was St Mark, though all other records say the parish was St Mary.

However there are two Kenningtons, one is in Kent, the other in Lambeth district, London.  The only prish register listed in Phillimore’s index is the Kent Kennington and this is way out of London.

It could just be that there was a parish in Lambeth with a St Mark’s church.  And that is indeed the case, listed in the Surrey parishes as Lambeth, St Mark, Kennington and the register is held at the London Metropolitan archive.  In which case, it must be possible to get a photocopy, though possibly only on Ancestry.

The baptism register adds that:

This was Entry 920 in the Baptism register,
The abode of her parents, and her probable birth place was Camberwell New Rone(? Road in later bapt),
His Job was Clerk in the Ordnance Office,
The officiating minister was H S Plumpton.

I have identified her as the third potential wife as she is clearly ‘Elizabeth’ in all subsequent censuses, not ‘Emily’.  A confirmation of this identification is that their youngest daughter was registered with the second name of ‘Cutler’.

But I can find nothing, so far, that is categoric for her parents.  Purchase the marriage cert?
