4th s. of Sir Brownlow Cust, 4th bart and later 1st baron Brownlow.
No record of his baptism has been found. The 1851 census reports that he was born in Bolton, Lincolnshire, but this is much more likely to have been a mishearing of Belton in Lincs which had been the family seat of the Brownlow family and whose sole heiress daughter maarried his grandfather, bringing Belton with her.
