His grandson David Jones says he was born on 8n Nov 1888 so this registration is probably his:

Surname First name(s) District Vol  Page
Births Mar 1889   (>99%)
Welford Joseph Middlesbro' 9d 495

His marriage certificate would confirm his age (hopefully).

David says that he can trace the Welfords back to the 17th century in Yorkshire.  Joseph, the father above, is reported to be born in Hinderwell, Yorks in 1881 then in Roxby, Yors in 1881 to 1911.  In 1871 he was on his grandparents’ farm in Roxby, Yorks, near Whitby and born there.  His grandfather, George Welford, had 57 acres and was 73 and widowed; he too was born in Roxby.

No sign of any of the family in 1861.

In 1851, George reappears, still at Roxby with 56 acres, a wife and sons George aged 19 and Ralph aged 12.  George the elder said he was 52, thus born in 1798/9 and born in Glazedale, Yorks.  George the younger was said to be born in Pickelby(?) and Ralph in Roxby.

In 1841, George was 40 (to the nearest 5 yrs) and a farmer, was born in the county and had sons Joseph, 15, George, 10, Ralph, 2, all born in the county
