Notes for Robert Fitz Robert Lord of Were
His wives and children are difficult to sort out.
Smyth says he married Hawisia de Gurney who was the mother of Mawrice de Gant and Eve de Gurney. Then he says that Eve ma. a Gurnay and had a son Robert de Gurnay; she then married Thomas filius William filius John de Herpetree. Maurice is implied to have dsp as his nephew Robert de Gurnay paid the hundred pounds release.
On the other hand Elliz gives a different story in the pedigree on page 20. He says that Robert fitz Robert had two wives, (1) Hawise de Gurnay and (2) Avie de Gaunt. Hawise de Gurnay was the mother of Eve de Gournay and Avoce de Gaunt was the mother of Maurice and Henry de Gaunt, a priest. Maurice then married (1) Maud d'Oilly inheriting vast northern estates and (2) a Margaret but dsp.; this account of Maurice is confirmed by recent research into the Oilly family.
