Where did his Lillistone name come from?  In 1902 and Amy Lillistone Lane had died and left 200 GWR shares to Poercy Powys Lane, this Lillistone’s uncle.  So Lillistone was a name already in use in the Lane family.

In 1900 Frederick William Lillistone of Kinirara, Kelsall, Suffolk had left 800 GWR shares to Amy Lillistone Lane, widow (almost certainly his widow), of the same address.

See FindMyPast for both these transactions.

On 3rd September 1829 Samuel Lane of Westminster St Ann married Eliza Lillistone - probably at Barsham, Suffolk.

His RN record shows a career from midshipman in 1914 to Lieut Commander in 1923 when he retired at own request.

In 1916 he was rated a V.G officer and was specially recommended for early advancement to Lieut.

By 1918 he had become a poor and listless officer.

In early 1920 he was again rated as a V.G. officer, now being a full Lieut.

In 1922 he was in hospital in Hong Kong and again in early 1923.

Then in March 1923 he retired and by August 1 was married.

In 1927 he was promoted to Lt Commander on the RN retired books.

In 1938 he had a job with Tanganyika Railways and was promoted to Commander on the RN books but a couple of months later this was rescinded.

In 1940 he was allowed to accept a commission in the Tanganyka Naval Volunteer Service.

On 5th June 1942 he was made OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours.
