Abstract of the Will of Sir Maurice Berkeley of Bruton, Somerset

Dated 10 Feb 1579, Proved 16 Nov 1581

In his will he make the following legacies (italics are my insertions):



-        to my wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Anthony Sandes of Threwley, Kent for her Dower, my Manor House(s?) at...Bruton.

-        to my second son Edward Berkeley my farm at Ditchit (=Datchet) called Red. Court Buckinghamshire, and a ten pounds pension out of the priory of St Jermyn as appeareth by conveyance between his brother in law Henry Champernoun.

-        to Francis Berkeley my third son the farm of Horsleigh in South Brewham (Somerset), and ten pounds per annum which Richard FitzJames Esq is bound to pay him during his life and after him to John Berkeley my fifth son.

-        to Robert Berkeley my fourth son the Manor of Patender (?) Kent.

-        to John Berkeley my youngest son my lease in Wanstrow (Somerset) I bought a lease of Sir James FitzJames in South Brewham.

-        to my daughters Ann and Margaret 600 pounds apiece overseen by mt nephew Sir George Speke, Sir Richard Barkeley (sic) Knight and John Francis Esquire.

-        To my four daughters Gertrude, Besse(?), Ann and Margaret 20 pounds apiece to buy their ????? (looks like Chayles)

A footnote says that Lady Elizabeth's will was proved on 26 Jun 1585.

Notes from Chancery Proceedings transcript (Sherwood Manuscripts, DD/SAS/C 795 FA 22/4 # 127)

John Champernoun of Modbury eldest son of St Philip Champernoun died before his father.  He married Catherine Blount, daughter of William Blount and had a son henry Champernoun.   Catherine remarried Sir Maurice Berkeley (Knight) of Bruton.  She died 23 Feb 1559 and was buried at Datcher Berkshire.  Maurice remarried Elizabeth Sandes.
