GeneralMarshal of Ireland.
Notes for John Marshal
Probably descended from Wm Marshal, earl of Pembroke, through an illegitimate line.

Montague Smith says he was nephew of William Marshal, 3rd earl of Pembroke and that he purchased the wardship of William Carew from Betram de Criol on 27 Dec 1230.
There wre two William Marshals who was earls of Pembroke (CP, vol X):
(a) William le Marshal who married Isabel heir of Gilbert de Styrigoil, 3rd earl, and was 4th earl in right of his wife,
(b) William Marshal, s. & h. of Williuam & Isabel, who became 5th earl & dsp.

How then could this John le Marshal be nephew of William, earl of Pembroke?  Two possibilities:

(a) He was illegitimate, otherwise he would have inherited the earldom; possibly s. of Gilbert, 7th earl who, ex CP, dsplegit.
(b) He was the son of the 4th earl's brother.  But William was already the 3rd brother to inherit the Marshalcy and nothing is known of any subseqent brothers.
