Notes for Sir John de Soules
The first guardian of Richard Lovel.

TFPL: Oct 2008: It seems likely, from Bruce McAndrew’s ‘Scotland’s Historic Heraldry’, p. 71, that he was the son if Sir Nicholas I de Soules. His nephew Nicholas II was a Competitor for the Scots crown in 1291. Clarification is being sought from an article on the De Soules family in the Transactions of the Dumfries & Galloway Nat Hist & Arch Soc of 1947.

However there is a dispute between Mc Andrew and Complete Peerage on John de Soules’ wife:
(a) CP says she was Hawise FitzAlan,
(b) McAndrew says she was Margaret, dau. of Merleswain of Andross.
That John d Soules held Old Roxburgh ties in better with the FitzAlan family which had previously held this.

John de Soules was an architect of the ‘Auld Alliance’ and in 1301-3 Guardian of Scotland.
Arms Generally notes for Sir John de Soules
McAndrew reports in his Scotland’s Historic Heraldry p. 71 that a seal in perfect condition survives showing him to have borne:

Barry of six argent and gules a bendlet for difference.
