11 Mar 1858: “LIST of Europeans belonging to the East India Company's Service, or not, who may have been Killed or Wounded by the hands of Mutineers or Rebels in the Savgor Division. Jubulpore, 28th. December, 1857,

“Circumstances under which the Murder took place.

“On the wing of the 12th N.I. and 14th Irregular Cavalry mutinying at Jhansee, on the 5th Juns, 1857, these officers, ladies, children, and many other Christians (in all some 75,) went into the Fort of Jhansee, and defended themselves for two days, but were overpowered. Captains Gordon and Burgess were, it is said, shot in the Fort. The rest it is believed were taken to a garden by mutineers and rebels, on a promise of their lives being spared if they surrendered, and then and there cruelly murdered ; it is said at the desire of the Ranee, widow of the late Rajah, but the exact particulars cannot be known until we regain possession of Jhansee.”
