DNB says he was the elder s. of Gilbert and grandson of William de Montfichet/ founder of the abbey of Stratford-Langton of Essex.
K-R (DD p. 398) echoes this in the report of Margaret de Clare who m. Wm de Montfichet, d. 1137, and was mother of Gilbert.
Sanders says that his heirs, or rather those of his son Richard, were Margery m. Hugh I de Bolbec, Aveline m. Wm de Forz (whose line expired) and Philippa m. Hugh I de Playz. Thus each sister' heirs ended with half the barony.
