Notes for William de Echingham
May 2004, TFPL: Latest discussion on s.g.m give his death as 18 Jan 1389 and his parents as James E. and Joan Dakeny.

TFPL, Jul, 2006: There are a couple of pages in Moor’s ‘Kts of Ed I’ on earlier William Etchinghams:
Sir William d. 1326, m. Eva, heir was his brother Robert.
Sir Wm, d. 1294, MP in 1280, heir was s. William.
William, d. 1253, his heir was bro. Simon.
There is not enough information to be sure of the relationships but it must be possible to go back a few generations before this William.

CP V, pp. 4-5 has an account of some earlier Echinghams:
Simon (II), b. c. 1218, inherited in1253.
Simon was br. and h. of William (I) who dsp and m. Margery de Montagu.
The latter William (I) was s. of an earlier Simon (I) de E.
Simon (II) had a son William (II) who d. 1294 and had m. a Katherine
William (II) has a son William (III) born 1265/6, became a peer in 1321 and dsps 1326. William (III) had married Eva, dau. & H. of Sir Ralph de Stopham.
The heir of William (III) (but not to the peerage of course) was his brother Robert. Robert dsp in 1327.
Robert’s heir was the next brother Simon (III).

Dec 2006, TFPL: Charlotte Smith (sgm 1 Jun 2006) has recommended “Scenes from provincial life - Knightly families in Sussex 1280-1480” and from the copy in SoG, I obtained a tree of the earlier Echinghams, but not an account of the research. So I will not (yet, anyway) include this William’s Ancestors but merely list them here:
