Geo Barron wrote in his account of the family:

“Horace Powys, born 19 ~DEc. 1835.  He was an officer in the Royal Navy, and died of fever 24 July 1857 on board H.M.S. Alarm at Panama.”

He was found in the Navy List of 20 June 1856, published by John Murray, as one of two Mates on HMS Alarm with seniority of 10 Aug 1955, page 138.
