FreeBMD has the death of a William Bowstead R Jacobson in Q2 of 1880, aged 39, registered at St Thomas, Devon vol 5b, p. 27. I think this has to be he, particulely since this lead to his birth record in 1840 in Oxford where his father later became Regius prof of Divinity.

In 1851 a W B R Jacobson was at an apparent boarding school at Haisley Farm, Twyford, Hants and reported to be born in 1841 in Weelwich (Woolwich?), Kent.
In 1840 odd he was a curate st St George Bloomsbury as he amended a baptism entry.
Not found in 1861.
In 1871 he was alive, though with no children:
