Notes for Sir Robert Stuart Bart
m. (1) Jean  Gilmour, (2) Helen Cockburn, the former with 7 s and 3 d, the latter wih 4 d only.

From George Home's "An Album of Scottish Families, 1694-96":

Stuart, Sr Rot, of Allanbank.  The 7th and youngest son of the Lord Provost of Edinburch (who died in 1681) by his 1st wife, Anne, sister of Sir Thomas Hope 1st Baronet of Craighall.  Born in 1643, he was a merchant in Leith.  After buying the Allanbank estate in Berwickshire he was in 1687 made a Baronet; he was to become MP for North Berwick 1698-1702.  His Lady, who was, we are told on 13 January 1695, lately brought to bed of a daughter, was Helen, daughter of Sir Alexander Cockburn of Langton, whom he had married nearly three years before as his second wife.  His house, a substantial 19 hearth one, housed him and his Lady, his first wife's mother (the Lady Craigmillar), his children (4 boys and 3 girls), his sister, a chaplain, and nineteen domestic servants (8 men and 11 women).  (SRO GD86/77OA).

The problem with the above is that  it has two names for Robt’s second wife, Marion McCulloch and Helen Cockburn.  Currently I favour the latter but I have no real evidence as yet.

From the Roll of burgess of Edinburhg, he became one as follows:

Sirr Robert Stewart, B. and G., of Allanbank, be r. of dec. fr. Sir James S. of Kirkfield, sometime provost, B. and G. graties 26 June 1691.

TFPL, Sep 2007: GEC in his Comp Barts clearly has Helen Cockburn as the 2nd wife, so I’m going to accept that.
