Arms Generally notes for Stephen Longspee
Azure, six lioncels rampant or. cf: CP, Vol XI. Appx G, pp. 133-142. But this is about his father’s arms, not his.
TFPL, Feb 2011: Walford’s roll, which was produced c. 1275, has on it the arms of:
Longspee, son frere: Azure, 6 lions Or, canton Ermine.
and this might very well be Stephen who was a third son. His father’s arms, on his seal, in the British Museum, definitely are the undifferenced version of this. No other Longspee family is known to have had multiple sons to adulthood.
If it is accepted that Stephen did, or at least should have, born a canton, then this is a separate coat of arms and his father’s, the undifferenced version should be shown as his on the P-L scheme of Quarterings.
