Notes for John Powys
Martin P-L writes:
John, second son of Thomas of Abingdon, was mentioned in his brother's will, and he was a witness to various local wills 1590-1608. He is always described as "gent.", but the Abingdon Powyses, despite being the senior branch of the family, seem to have been less distinguished than either our or the Ludlow branches.
There is no suggestion that they displayed armorial bearings.
1567 born.
1587 married Agnes Townsend.
1615 died; no will survives.
James, witness to a will 1648.
Described as "of Abingdon".
Perhaps a son of John. This is the last mention of Powyses in Abingdon (where they are regularly spelt Powes). There are many gaps in the registers during this period, and not everyone was baptised, so there may have been more than those I have mentioned.
